The Voices from the Rwanda Tribunal project with the UW Information School invites people interested in human rights and international criminal justice to view and help categorize video interviews with personnel from the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.
In September of 2008, a team of information scientists, legal experts, and cinematographers set out to capture on video the voices of those who were part of the legal process of the UN-International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. The team conducted 49 video interviews with the judges, prosecutors, defense counsel, interpreters, court administrators, prison wardens, and many others associated with the ICTR on location in Arusha, Tanzania and in Rwanda.
In preparation for releasing these interviews to the public, interested students, faculty, staff, and members of the Seattle community are invited to join the Tribunal Voices researchers in watching the videos and "tagging" them according to the subject matter and topics covered in the interviews. This involves taking brief notes while watching the videos. Examples of "tags" or categories of subject matter include: sexual violence, rape as genocide, justice, retributive or restorative justice, civil and common law practices, or the challenges of field investigation. Participants will be encouraged to generate as many subject categories as they feel apply to individual segments of the video material. This work will lead to the development of an online crowdsourcing system for the Tribunal Voices collection.
Screenings of the videos will be held each Friday from 3:30 - 6:00 pm, on the University of Washington campus, Mary Gates Hall, Room 420. People are welcome to join for all or a portion of the time, and to invite friends and associates to participate as well. Please feel free to share this email with others.
If you have questions, please contact Nell Carden Grey or Milli Lake.
We hope you'll join us!
